I have to hand it to Trump for this brilliant piece of branding, which says in effect: “Any reporting that makes me look bad or is unfavorable to my administration is ‘fake news.’ The mainstream media are your enemies; all they want to do is mislead you and bring me down.” Other presidents have decried media coverage they considered unfair but they did it after the fact, they didn’t give it a name, and they didn’t repeat that name incessantly. It’s the “label-libel gambit” in action and Trump has mastered it.
