We are witnessing some controversy over the Confederate flag. I can understand how some view it as a symbol of a pro-slavery government, but many are not aware that Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri were all slave states, and remained so throughout the war between the states. The Emancipation Proclamation did not affect them, as it only freed slaves in the rebellious states. Slavery existed in Delaware and Kentucky until the passage of the 13th Amendment in December 1865. We are very hard on the "south," but ignore our neighbor's status as a slave state until the end.
