Violence is part of life. There is now a buzz phrase in the news, “police violence,” that reminds me of an older buzz phrase, “gun violence.” We live in a violent society. If we want to enforce laws (society has the option not to) then violence must be met by superior violence. The Courts have long held that the standard of reasonableness be applied to the use of violence. But that is judged from the perspective of police using it, not people comfortably at home. The law does not excuse excessive or unnecessary violence. So, if you violently resist the police, you may see “police violence.”
