I was the editor of a daily newspaper that went to press at 11:30 a.m. We had one hour to send reporters out to the streets, stores, schools to collect comments and reactions. We found people who'd reached out to friends and family in New York City. For instance, one woman had come out of her building, decided it was chilly, went back inside to get a sweater — otherwise, she'd have been in the building when it collapsed. She had called her sister in our town. Our follow-up included many personal stories of heroism, fear, and tragedy. We were 200 miles away, but deeply felt the impact.
