A spouter described barrier island residents as parasites. He also claimed that there would be jobs without the barrier islands. That is about as ignorant as it gets. Maybe he is a farmer or on public assistance, but if you wash away the shore towns this county would be like a third world country. The people offshore may be more parasitic, considering that most jobs not related to tourism exist to provide goods and services to people who are employed in tourism. He needs a quick lesson in sociology and economics. Only 38,000 people live offshore, and most of their jobs would disappear.
