In the Old Testament, Cain asks God, "I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?” There is no definitive answer until the New Testament when Jesus affirms that we are our brothers' keepers, in one example in John 4:21, "And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother." Like many Christians, I believe that, and I have given time and money to charity for the good of the less fortunate. But my blood boils when the government wants to force me to support wanton lazy people and drug addicts. Let each give according to his conscience, not as demanded by politicians.
