Avalon - What do family farms, Disneyland, Longwood Gardens, the Los Angeles Flower Market, and some residential areas of Chicago have in common? They have "employees" whose job description lists just one task: control the rodent population. Volunteers care for the feline "workers," whose mere presence deters an invasion of rodents. The homeless cats of Avalon and other shore towns provide the same benefit. And because they too have caretakers who feed and shelter them, they are less apt to hunt for birds. Rats and mice, on the other hand, will happily devour bird eggs and baby birds anytime.
