On 911 I was on the third floor of Kearny High School in Hudson County, directly across from the World Trade Center. We were settled into the first period when outside the east windows we saw a plane strike the first tower. Initially it was thought to be a small aircraft, an accident. Then we saw a wide body jet slam into the second tower. Our country was being attacked! Our school went into lockdown and everyone found a spot where they could watch. It was a crystal clear day and we could see exactly what the news was broadcasting live. By afternoon we witnessed the first tower imploding, crumbling, then dust. Soon after the second tower was gone too, just clouds of thick smoke filled the streets. There were few explanations and no answers. Everyone was in shock while some panicked thinking of family and friends who worked went to work that morning in NYC. Finally the dismissal bell rang. Silently staff and students ended a day they would never forget.Later as I looked east toward the destruction with binoculars, my only question was ‘’ Where did all the people go?’’
