I don’t recall how I first heard about the attacks, but I was home early that morning getting ready for work as an editor at The Bergen Record. On my ride in I had the radio on and knew that I would come to spot on a high Route 46 overpass in Clifton from which I’d have a clear view of the Twin Towers. I drove very slowly through and saw one Tower smoking; the other hadn’t been hit yet. The newsroom that day was hushed and somber as well as frenetic at the same time as we did our jobs, which for some of us included trying to reach a site that was just across the nearby Hudson and down a little ways but almost impossible to get to that day. My wife and I had quickly realized that my brother and a close friend in our town worked in the Towers; my brother miraculously had called in sick, and our friend made it down a stairway 86 floors to safety. I think it was the very next day that our paper’s photographer, Tom Franklin, one of the nicest persons you could know, took the iconic shot of the firemen raising the flag amid the ruins… Cedar Grove
