On 911, I was on the third floor of Kearny High School in Hudson County.We were settled into the first period of new school year. From the windows we saw where a plane had struck a tower of the World Trade Center. Initially it was thought to be a small aircraft, an accident. Then we saw the next wide body jet slam into the second building. Our country was being attacked. We went into lock down and everyone found a spot where we could watch. It was a crystal clear day and we could see exactly the same scenario as the tv was broadcasting. By lunch time we witnessed the first tower imploding, crumbling, and then dust.Then the second tower too was gone, into a clouds of smoke. There were few explanations and no answers. Everyone was in shock while some panicked, thinking of family and friends who worked 20 minutes away in NYC. Students had to stay in school unless a parent came for them. FINALLY the dismissal bell rang and everyone went home to begin to figure out what was happening. As I looked over with binoculars that afternoon my only question was ‘Where did all the people go?’
