For much of the 20th century, Sweden had a single-payer system of healthcare in which the government paid almost all healthcare costs. Like other nations with a single-payer system, Sweden has had to deal with the problem of ever-growing healthcare expenses causing a strain on government budgets. It has dealt with this problem by rationing healthcare, instituting waiting lists for medical appointments and surgery. Sweden's and Denmarks' healthcare system should be a red flag for the U.S. Sooner or later, you always run out of other people's money! Free market choice is best.
