The Court House spouter who lauded the Canadians for welcoming our "conscientious objectors" during what he or she termed the "Vietnam fiasco" shows a perfect mindset why we can't embrace Canada as a political ally. They were draft dodgers; true COs could get draft exemptions, and while we were at war, the morale of those who willingly fought for our country was severely damaged by Canadian sanctuary for cowards and slackers. The politics of any war can be questioned, but knowingly aiding those who oppose it are not are friends.
