I read the Herald article about the Battle of the Bulge Vets getting together to talk about their experiences. Most of these guys were very young, 17-21 years old and joined up after they and their families had suffered the economic hardship of the Great Depression. Many had spent their childhood working odd jobs to help out their families. Then I read the other article about the opiate addiction problem in this county among 17-21 year-olds. One era works to support their families and goes to war to protect their country, while another era has nothing to do, so they get high. Disgraceful.
