Speaker Johnson is defending the 1,500-page spending bill unveiled on Tuesday. It started as a simple measure to avert a government shutdown until mid-March but became a magnet for more than $100 billion in emergency disaster and farm aid, plus unrelated policy measures. Some House Republicans are unhappy with the bill, deriding it as the kind of old-school, stuffed with pork bill they pledged to derail. It’s not clear whether GOP leadership will have enough votes on their side to clear the 2/3 majority most likely needed for passage. That would mean a government shutdown before Christmas.
