Why do some news reports use the metric system when describing

West Wildwood - Why do some news reports use the metric system when describing events. For instance, a reporter said the submersible that went to view the Titanic was about 4000 meters under the sea. Why not say it’s about 12,500 feet under the sea? We don’t use the metric system. That was tried back in the 70’s and Americans hated it and it failed to catch on.
