Someone commented to my spout and said, "I agree that drug addicts steal, lie, and hurt others, but they don't do any of that when they are sober. Treatment is the best option for addicts, not throwing them in jail." That may be true, for the ones who are not stealing and robbing to satisfy their habits. It doesn't matter why or how they became addicted, people who hurt the rest of us are a threat, and I would rather protect the millions of us who are sober by warehousing those who threaten us. Are we supposed to tolerate their crimes until they get sober?
