What is up with the detour for the roadwork on Rt. 50?

Upper Township - What is up with the detour for the roadwork on Rt. 50? It takes you out to no man's land. Took an hour to get to Mays Landing when it's normally a half hour drive. Nice time of year to start road projects with Memorial Day weekend right around the corner.
