Upper Township - Just to clarify some of the spouts pertaining to volunteer firefighters receiving compensation, volunteers throughout Cape May County receive workman’s comp coverage, clothing allowances, hourly “stipend pay,” some departments go as far as providing health insurance. Anyone who thinks volunteer fire departments aren’t costing close to a paid fire department is in denial. Then factor in what a volunteer responding from home vs. a paid, on-duty career department does to your fire tax, and I guarantee everyone would prefer a career department.
