Stone Harbor - My hometown used to sound its siren for everything from fender benders and smoke detectors set off by overcooked food to actual accidents with injuries and structure fires. Then came the severe Delaware River flooding of 2006. The siren went off as an emergency alert for the rising waters and most residents disregarded it, having become inured to the commonplace sound that was the near-daily wailing of the siren. The phrase "the boy who cried wolf" comes to mind. The siren was eliminated for all but true alerts a decade ago, and my hometown is the safer for it.
