A Wildwood spouter says, “going cold turkey in jail is just as good a treatment as methadone clinics…” First, by any measure, going cold turkey is not as effective as methadone. Second, a year of methadone costs about $4,700; a year in jail in N.J. costs about $54,800. I agree, nobody forced (most) addicts to take heroin. But they did, their addictions caused societal problems, and society has to deal with that. The choice is between a costly, ineffective solution and an inexpensive, effective one.
