A Wildwood Crest spouter asks why a person should do more with his life when he can make $15/hr pumping gas. The problem is that no matter what he makes, it costs about $61,392 a year for two working adults with two kids to live a no-frills life in Cape May County. That’s $14.76 per hour per working adult. If the employer does not pay that much, then “We the People” have to subsidize the family through TANF, SNAP, Medicaid, etc. Employers love that idea – privatize profits, socialize costs. We should resist that; when private-paid wages go up, taxpayer-paid public assistance costs go down.
