Skunks feed mainly on grubs, not trash. They leave lawns pretty torn up when they pass through. Most cats don't pick trash, but some do. Raccoons and seagulls will work over a poorly-secured trash can or bag, crows too. While it is a good practice to not put your trash out too early, and it's good to put it out in good, secure containers, it has nothing to do with the wild-animal problem.
