I hate to disappoint the Cape May spouter who favors mandatory 20 percent gratuity but some servers just don't deserve it. If you don't serve the customers well you should not expect a good tip, no matter how many people you have to split it with. They call your business a customer-service industry. Find another line of work if you think just doing the minimum entitles you to a decent tip.
