Ocean City - A SH/Cold Spring spouter praised the "stipends" given to SH volunteer firefighters. If they have a paid stipend, they are no longer volunteers, they are paid/on-call firefighters. It is a common practice in many parts of the country. The problems that the shore towns all share is that it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to afford to live on the islands full-time. Look at the price of a home in Avalon, Stone Harbor or Sea Isle. Too many former residents, who were volunteers, now live in off-shore communities, too far off island to be able to respond promptly.
