To quote a Lower Twp. spouter, "Barrier islands were never meant to be built on or to live on. It is time to cut these barrier island welfare queens off by terminating beach replenishment and the national flood insurance program. An OC spouter says he isn't leaving. Fine, but don't beg for my tax dollars to protect your home so you can get cheap insurance." Yes, they were never meant to be lived on. But that fact was obscure 100 or so years ago when they were developed. We pay for our flood insurance, the same as anyone else in the U.S. at risk of flooding, including rivers and bays.
