A Cape May spouter suggested a $5,000 tax credit to recruit vol. firefighters. I wonder if the spouter would join if that credit were to come true? Much of the public has little understanding of what is needed to be a firefighter. Career or volunteer, the standards are the same. Volunteers must attend well over a minimum of 100 hours in training on their own time, for certification, and must also drill two, three, even four nights each month. They must get up at all hours of the day and night and respond to potentially life-threatening emergencies, and be fit and well-trained enough to do so.
