I am of Italian descent. I was taught that Columbus was an Italian explorer, sponsored by Queen Isabella to make his voyage and that he discovered the new world. Italians have been proud of him. Why were we never taught the truth? I was appalled to learn that he enslaved 5,000 people, condoned rape, murder, torture, and was punishished by Isabella and Ferdinand for the way he treated natives. I am so embarrassed to call him an Italian. Time for those of us whose families immigrated to the U.S. and helped to build and defend this country to call out Columbus for what he was! Change history now!
