He/she probably went to their residence for a lunch/dinner break, since you obviously know their job is unpredictable. Also, before you point this one out, detectives have take home vehicles in the case that they are called out to the scene of a MVA, assault, burglary, etc. So to answer your question, yes, I believe it is appropriate.
