There is no legitimate argument for the electoral college in spite of the editor's comments. Every other election is determined by popular vote. So should the presidential election. We will always be at risk of getting illegitimate presidents like Bush and Trump until we get rid of the electoral college. If you can't win the popular vote, you're not a legitimate president!
