The book parents at LTES are complaining about is Long Way Down. It is the story of a teen who wants to avenge the shooting death of his brother. Ultimately he sees that violence is not the answer. It is rated as 12+. It was not assigned, it was a book in the library. The truth is many kids today prefer to read books that address the realities of many people's lives and reflect what they see on screens. Don't let your child read it if it bothers you but please don't try to take materials away from students who may benefit from the final decision to not embrace violence in their world.
