In 2025 Cape Verde, Mauritius and Seychelles, all sub-Saharan countries, officially eliminated measles. Twenty-one Pacific island countries also eliminated measles this year. Globally, measles deaths dropped 88% between 2000 and 2024. But in November, the Americas region lost its measles-free status, with the US facing its worst outbreak in decades, due to misinformation and skepticism about vaccination.
