Erma - The CM spouter on Monarchs is correct. Three yrs ago I raised dozens of them, but the last 2 yrs almost every egg was eaten by predators such as praying mantises. The few caterpillars that hatched all died in a few days. It is not necessary for the city to give out the milkweed plants. Just find an old plant and plant the seeds from one of the pods. They grow like crazy and if you let the pods burst when they dry out, they will grow all over your lawn next year. Metamorphosis is an amazing thing to watch.
