Take a close look at your child’s classmates. Based on a class of 20, only 8 to 10 will have both parents living with them. Two to 3 will be living with a grandparent. One to 2 will have some other type of guardian arrangement. The rest will be with either their mother or father. Nine to 11 will have at least one parent who has served prison time. Three to 4 will have served more than five years. Of all 20, around 5 to 7 of their parents will have substance issues. New teachers or experienced teachers, the problem is the children and the root cause is their parents, and life outside of school.
