You do need a mercantile license. You become a business when you rent out your home, and you must pay the IRS too. You must also inform your homeowner's insurance. If something were to happen in your house when you are renting it out, your homeowner's insurance is not obligated to pay. Especially, if they do not know you are renting it out.
