Cape May - Our ocean lifeguards start at $11/hr, they make less than Steger’s employees, hotel beach attendants, pool lifeguards, etc. Many of the guards are returning, not to the beach, but to the restaurants as busboys, barbacks, & dish washers because they can’t afford rent. Leaving our beaches severely understaffed, the few that still remain are out training hard every morning, hours before their shift begins. Many individuals hold EMT certifications. They guard us through rough seas, hurricanes & lightning. We have the lowest paid lifeguards on the shore. The city cares more about money than safety.
