Cape May - If Cape May is serious about creating a fund to improve the parking situation, they should start by increasing the low rents they charge some users of city property. For example, hundreds of people pay $500 a year for a private permit parking space in front of their homes or rental properties. That's $42 a month to rent a prime piece of real estate and no one else can park there when the space is empty, which could be six or 10 months a year. Also, permit parking increases a property's value just like a home addition, but there is no added real estate tax assessment for parking permits.
