Cape May - I just read a letter to the editor where part of the examples of racism was the 3/5 of a person used when counting slaves. Complaining about that is an example of total ignorance of the historical reason for that. The pro-slavery states had a much larger population than the anti-slave north when the slaves were added in. That would give the south a Congressional advantage. To keep the pro-slave south from gaining that advantage due to their larger population, slaves were only counted as 3/5 person. It is an anti-slavery compromise and anyone who knows history knows that.
