Cape May - According to a Herald article, Coulter (Cape May Fire Chief), who began his career as a volunteer firefighter, said the crisis in volunteer departments is forcing a reevaluation of the city’s needs. Many volunteer departments do not have enough fully-qualified personnel. He said that in Cape May, he had three air-pack qualified volunteers. “That is just not going to help,” he said. My question is why? With a year-round population of 3,400, there are only three citizens who are fit enough and tough enough to devote time to train and contribute to the community? I bet there are lots more, and they complain about paying a career fire department.
