One needs look no further than Cumberland County, which Route 55 runs through, to see that this claim is bogus. Cumberland County is the most economically-depressed county in New Jersey after 40 years of Route 55. Route 55 is not needed and not wanted and its extension would do nothing to improve Cape May County.
