Avalon - Who is guarding our beaches? Recently, 33 candidates, mostly young students, tried out for the beach patrol on a cool, windy day. Ten swimmers had to quit swimming because they were too cold. Two young teachers with extensive distance swimming expertise placed second and eighth in the swim and did not make the squad, apparently because they were deemed too old at 30 and 33! The young lady finished second overall in this year's Tampa Bay Marathon and the young man was the first person to ever swim around Seven-Mile Island and Cape May island. It's time Borough Council takes a close look.
