Avalon - Prayer in public schools has not been banned. A child may pray privately at any time in a public school, provided that doing so does not interfere with the education process. What is prohibited, properly so, is the sort of prayer that some Christians have in mind; prescribed, organized group prayer. That's because public schools are just that, schools for the public, not schools for children of the Christian faith. Public schools may not show favoritism to children of one skin color, for example, nor may they give preference to children of the Christian faith over those of other faiths.
