Avalon - I have seen a couple of spouts critical of Avalon Beach patrol lately. ABP is a fine organization with a track record of success, so it is hard to argue against their model. However, I have vacationed in lots of places that are equally as safe where you could actually swim in the ocean and stray more than a few yards away from the front of the stand. It is understandable why their record is so good, because they leave very little to chance. That means that people who want to swim, not just jump over knee high waves, must do so when the beaches are unprotected. That poses a true risk.
