Avalon - In his July 9 commentary, William Dahms claims that gun registration will not result in a reduction in firearms homicides. The NRA argues that the solution to gun violence is to punish the criminal. Registration of guns facilitates law enforcement's pursuit and apprehension of criminals and the justice system's punishment of them. The easier it is for law enforcement and the judicial system to do so, the less likely that someone will be tempted to commit a crime with a gun. Gun registration is in fact a deterrent to crime, and a tool that supports the NRA's solution to gun crimes.
