Avalon - Flying a tattered American flag is unacceptable and a disservice to our country. Flags are not made to withstand the winter winds and rain. Residents who are gone should take the flag down before leaving town. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be burned in a dignified manner. There is a disposal box at the American Legion in Stone Harbor for this purpose. Proper flag etiquette is a must! Also, an American flag flown after dark should be illuminated.
