One spouter took the time to look up the U.S.S Liberty incident. I recall it, I was in the U.S. Navy at the time. The attack came in the opening days of the 1967 "6 Day War." The liberty's mission was to gather intelligence, it was a "spy ship," just like the Russian trawlers that shadowed our fleets everywhere. We will never know for sure whether it was an intentional attack or a mistake of war by Israel. Don't forget, in 1967 the Soviets backed the Arabs, and we had different interests. Israel is still our ally and shares a common foe in Islamic extremists. It was widely reported in 1967.
