I heard about a high school stabbing on the news today. Why? The high school was in California. There are over 27,000 high schools in the US. Can we infer that there were no stabbings in the 26,999 others? Were there many a dozen stabbings in the others? We don’t know. Why do we care? How about the 866 high schools here in New Jersey? Our impression of fact and scope is being completely distorted by the way in which we are receiving “news.” Too much unfiltered information taken out of context is hurting us as a society.
