Wildwood - I had a polite debate with a neighbor recently, who sincerely asked, "Why don't the police shoot the guns out of their hands," in reference to recent fatal police encounters. She honestly does not realize police are just ordinary folks. Unlike TV and movies, police do not frequently engage in armed combat. In fact, most retire without ever having fired a weapon anywhere except the practice range. They are also not all third-degree black belts in Kung Fu. We ask them to enforce the law, even against some impossibly tough criminals. They can't just walk away.
