Perhaps the answer lies in unemployment? Only 1 other county, Atlantic, with its shuttered casinos, fared worse than Cape May County (26.6%). Atlantic County’s unemployment hit 33.3%. They are as high as the highest points of unemployment in the worst economic depression in our history during the 1930s. Could that be why people are standing in line during a pandemic to get food to feed their families?
