The Trump administration’s assault on national forests continues: The USDA announced it is moving forward to chuck the roadless rule. That could open about 1/3 of the entire national forest system, nearly 45 million acres, to road construction, drilling, and logging. In 2001 the roadless rule received the most support for an administrative rule in history; when the Trump administration solicited comments for their proposal to rescind the rule last year, roughly 95% of the more than 625,000 comments submitted favored keeping the protections for America’s old-growth forests.
