The Treasury Department is scrapping a rule meant to expose who is behind anonymous shell companies. U.S. Companies will no longer have to tell the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit who actually owns them. Information the government already collected will be deleted. Experts said the move would benefit criminals who use anonymous shell companies. These companies can be used to hide assets, obscure the source of funds, and facilitate crimes, including money laundering and drug trafficking.
